Introduction

AVM offers a product called the "FritzBox" that is a very popular product in Germany (see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz!Box and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FRITZ!Box). This devices includes a ISDN connection and a DSP connection; some of the devices even have a cordless phone connection. Thanks to a large installed base, the ISDN gateway works very well in the European environment.

The FritzBox also supports SIP. The original intention was to register the device to a SIP service provider; however the latest version now also allows that a SIP phone registers with the FritzBox. pbxnsip users can use this feature to use the FritzBox as a SIP to PSTN gateway.

The FritzBox is a very interesting alternative to large ISDN gateways just because it is so widely available and fills the gap in the low-density ISDN gateway market with just one BRI channel. This is very interesting in offices that just need two simultaneous calls and which already have a server running in the office, so that the PBX process can run on that server and use the FritzBox as PSTN gateway.

FritzBox Setup

You need a new software load for the FritzBox. The version number must be higher than 54.04.69. See http://www.avm.de/de/Service/Service-Portale/Service-Portal/Labor/labor.php for the latest available images.

In order to set up the SIP phone on the FritzBox select "Einstellung -> Telefoniegeräte -> neues IP/WLAN Telefon" (in German). The account number is assigned by the FritzBox and cannot be changed; however that does not matter because the PBX will just use this number for registration purposes. Note that you can even register your PBX via WLAN.

PBX Setup

In order to use the FritzBox, you need to create a Registration trunk on the PBX. Register it with the account provided by the FritzBox and make sure that you are using the outbound proxy (e.g. "sip:192.168.0.1"). The domain should be set to "fritz.box". You should not use the Remote Party Indication (set it to "No Indication").

A special thanks goes to Achim Kohlenberger (Xantaro) and to AVM who created this setup.
