Shared Line Appearances

Key systems enable users to put a call on hold on a line and then all the other phones will see the line flashing and be able to pick up the call easily by pressing the button of that line. It is much easier than park and pick up for users coming from older key systems. Phones that support the buttons package can support this feature using co lines on a trunk and buttons. The following steps are necessary to get SLA configured.

  • 1. Add co lines on the trunk. CO or central office lines can be called anything as long as they are consistent between the co lines and the buttons. They are case sensitive so keep that in mind. We like to use co1 ….. since that is the easiest to remember but it could be c1 c2 c3 …. Go into the domain trunk settings and add the co lines to the trunk. It works on sip trunks or gateway trunks since it is the pbxnsip software that is keeping track of this so it does not matter what the actual ITSP or SIP trunking provider is.

  • 2. Create a button group with the shared lines in it. The button group can be called anything and will be used to map the button group to the extension. Buttons are used to configure the buttons on the snom phones automatically. They can be configured manually but this document describes how to use plug and play (pnp) since that is the best way to get used to doing it. The first time is time consuming but worth learning for the second time. Buttons are on the domain level under settings. You need to map the co lines that were created in the trunk to the appropriate button on the snom phones. In this example we are mapping the first 8 buttons on the snom phones to co lines 1-8 as shared lines.

  • 3. Prepare the extension for plug and play and map the button profile to it. Go into the accounts registration tab and add the mac address for the extension you want to bind this phone to. Make sure it is in capitals. Also on this page make sure to bind the configuration or button profile that was created earlier to this extension.

  • 4. Make sure the port is configured to enable the system to respond to configuration requests. In the administrator port tftp section you will see the generate passwords so set it to always no security check while doing the pnp.

  • 5. If it is working then you should be able to go directly to that URL programmed into the phone from any web browser and see the following.

  • 6. Configure the snom phone for plug and play to grab the config file. Make sure the snom phone is running 7.1.35. If not update or downgrade the snom phones accordingly. Visit wiki.snom.com to see how to upgrade/downgrade the snom phones. Once they are on 7.1.35 then go to update and make sure the update policy is set to update automatically. Inside the setting url you must specify the IP address of the pbxnsip server and if the http port is moved from 80 specify it with a : after the IP address along with the provisioning subdirectory/snom type-mac address.htm

http: //192.168.1.15/ provisioning/snom360-000413292E91.htm or if the http port is 8080

Reboot the phone and indenty 1 should be set and the function keys should also be set.

The following is the Function Keys screen shot.

If for some reason it does not work check the log file of the snom phone and make sure that the provisioning server is being reached and can be contacted.

At this point you should be able to call into the trunk and route the call to the phone and all the phones that have the button configured should see the light on. Put the call on hold, they all flash, page the company to say call on line 1 and anyone can pick it up that is near the phone like an old key system or square.
